Tocopherol acetate, also known as vitamin E acetate, is a common vitamin supplement. It is an ester of acetic acid and tocopherol (vitamin E) and is commonly used in skin care products such as skin creams. Tocopherol acetate is not oxidized and can penetrate the skin into living cells, of which about 5% is converted to free tocopherol, providing beneficial antioxidant effects. Because the phenol hydroxyl group is blocked, tocopherol acetate is used as a substitute for the tocopherol itself, providing a less acidic product with a longer shelf life. It is thought that once absorbed into the skin, the acetate is slowly hydrolyzed, regenerating tocopherols and providing sun protection.
