Anhydrous calcium chloride is white porous frit or particle. Easy deliquescence. The melting point is 782ºC, the density is 2.15g/cm3, the boiling point is higher than 1600ºC, it is easily soluble in water and emits a lot of heat, but also soluble in ethanol. The common calcium chloride hexahydrate is CaCl2·6H2O, colorless tripartite crystal, easy to dissolve, bitter and salty, density 1.71g/cm3, 29.92ºC dissolved in crystal water. When heated to 30ºC, four molecules of water are lost to form dihydrate (CaCl2·2H2O), a white porous and hygroscopic solid, which can be generated by continued heating. When the temperature is higher than 200ºC, the water is completely lost and the anhydrous calcium chloride with strong hygroscopic property is formed.
Calcium chloride is an inorganic salt, which exists as solid or liquid. Solid calcium chloride is a white, crystal substance in the form of flake, granule, pellet or powder. With different crystallized water contents, it can be dihydrate or anhydrous. Liquid calcium chloride is a colorless, clear solution. As calcium chloride has such properties as quick dissolving, exothermic ability, attracting moisture from the air and surroundings, dissolving at very low temperature.
Calcium chloride can be added to foods as a calcium booster, or as a coagulant for tofu and cheese.
Calcium chloride can be added to alcoholic and refreshing beverages to regulate the PH and hardness of the beverage.
It is used as calcium fortification agent, curing agent, chelating agent and desiccant in food industry. It can increase the permeability of bacterial cell wall.
The dissolving and exothermic nature of calcium chloride makes it used in self-heating cans and heating pads.
