CAS 9004-67-5 Methyl cellulose (or methylcellulose) is a chemical compound derived from cellulose. It is a hydrophilic white powder in pure form and dissolves in cold (but not in hot) water, forming a clear viscous solution or gel. It is sold under a variety of trade names and is used as a thickener and emulsifier in various food and cosmetic products, and also as a treatment of constipation. Like cellulose, it is not digestible, not toxic, and not an allergen.

Methyl cellulose is widely used in the construction industry, such as as an adhesive for cement, mortar, joint desliming, etc. It is used as film agent and adhesive in cosmetics, medicine and food industry. Also used as textile printing and dyeing Chemicalbook paste, synthetic resin dispersant, coating film forming agent and thickening agent. Alkali cellulose is prepared from pulp, which is then reacted with chloromethane or dimethyl sulfate in an autoclave, and then refined with warm water.
